Why We Don’t Make Thousands of Every Design

One question I get asked from time to time is why some of our products sell out.

The simple answer?

Because we’ve never wanted to become a business that makes thousands of every design.

From the very beginning, Sand + Salt Kids has been about creating small-batch collections.

Not because it’s trendy.

Because it’s the way I wanted to build this business.

Every Collection Starts Small

When I’m designing a new collection, I don’t know exactly what customers are going to love.

I have my favourites.

I have pieces I’m really excited about.

But until they reach real families, nobody truly knows.

That’s why we produce in smaller quantities.

It allows us to test new ideas.

Try different colours.

Experiment with graphics.

Learn from every collection.

Instead of filling a warehouse with thousands of pieces, we create limited runs and listen to what our customers tell us.

It Means Some Things Sell Out

I’ll be honest…

It can be frustrating.

I’ve had parents message asking if a certain size is coming back.

Sometimes the answer is yes.

Sometimes the answer is no.

That’s the reality of making small batches.

Once they’re gone, they’re often gone for good.

Small Batch Means Better Decisions

Producing smaller runs also means I can spend more time thinking about every product.

The fit.

The colours.

The graphics.

The little details.

Instead of rushing to release dozens of designs, I can focus on making each one something I’d happily dress my own boys in.

It’s A Slower Way To Build A Brand

There are definitely faster ways to grow.

I could make thousands of every design.

I could chase every trend.

I could release new collections constantly.

But that isn’t why I started Sand + Salt Kids.

I wanted to build something that felt thoughtful.

Something that reflected our coastal lifestyle.

Something that kids genuinely wanted to wear.

Why We’ll Keep Doing It This Way

Small batch isn’t always the easiest option.

But after six years, I still believe it’s the right one.

It allows us to stay creative.

It allows us to keep improving.

And it means every collection feels just a little bit more special.

That’s why you’ll never see hundreds of designs released every month.

I’d rather create fewer pieces that families truly love than lots of pieces they’ll forget.

Because that’s always been the goal.

Clothes kids reach for first And memories that last a whole lot longer.
