Beachside Bliss: Introducing My Kids to Yoga and Meditation

Beachside Bliss: Introducing My Kids to Yoga and Meditation

, by SAND N SALT KIDS, 3 min reading time

I’ve been meaning to catch up and share a bit about our life by the beach and how I’ve been introducing my boys to yoga and meditation. It’s been such a game-changer for us, and I thought you might enjoy hearing about it.

Life by the Beach

Living on Phillip Island is like a dream come true. There’s something magical about waking up to the sound of waves crashing and the smell of salty sea air. The beach is practically our backyard, and the boys love it. Whether we’re building sandcastles, searching for seashells, or catching waves, there’s always an adventure waiting just outside our door.

The Calm Within the Chaos

As much as we love our active beach life, I’ve been looking for ways to introduce a bit of calm into our routine. Kids have boundless energy (as you know!), and I wanted to find a way to help them channel it positively. That’s when I stumbled upon the idea of yoga and meditation for kids.

Starting with Yoga

We started with some simple yoga poses. I found a few fun videos online, and we set up a little yoga spot in our living room. The boys were a bit skeptical at first, but once they saw me doing it, they were all in. We turned it into a game – who could hold the tree pose the longest, or who could stretch the furthest in the downward dog.

It’s been amazing to see how much they’ve taken to it. Not only are they getting some great physical exercise, but it’s also been a fantastic way for us to bond. Plus, it’s hilarious to see them attempt some of the poses – there’s always lots of giggles involved!

Introducing Meditation

Meditation was a bit trickier at first. Trying to get young kids to sit still and focus seemed like an impossible task. But we started small – just a couple of minutes each day. We’d sit together, close our eyes, and take deep breaths. I’d guide them with simple instructions, like imagining they were floating on a cloud or feeling the warmth of the sun on their skin.

Surprisingly, they really got into it. It’s become a peaceful part of our day, a little moment of calm amidst the chaos. And honestly, it’s been great for me too. Taking those few minutes to breathe and be present has done wonders for my own stress levels.

The Benefits We’ve Seen

Since we’ve started incorporating yoga and meditation into our routine, I’ve noticed some pretty incredible changes. The boys seem more centered and focused. They’re better at handling their emotions and seem to have a bit more patience (most days, anyway!).

And it’s not just about the mental benefits. Yoga has helped them develop strength and flexibility, which is fantastic for all their beachside adventures. Plus, it’s taught them the importance of taking care of their bodies and minds, which is something I hope they carry with them as they grow.

Making It Fun

The key to getting kids interested in yoga and meditation is to make it fun. We have yoga mats with cool designs, and sometimes we do yoga on the beach, which they absolutely love. For meditation, I’ve found some great guided meditations for kids that tell stories and use their imagination.

And of course, we don’t take it too seriously. If they get distracted or start being silly, we just go with the flow. The whole point is to make it a positive experience, something they look forward to rather than a chore.

So, that’s our little journey into the world of yoga and meditation. It’s been a beautiful way to balance the energy of our beach life with some much-needed calm. Give it a try and let me know how it goes – I’d love to hear about your experiences!
